While the Board gives policy direction, the Secretariat is charged with operationalising policy and other day-to-day matters of the Commission.

Composition of the Secretariat

The Secretariat is headed by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Commission. The Secretariat is divided into six (6) main departments: Executive Office, Sports Development, Business Development, Finance, Human Resources and Administration, Lands and Facilities and Internal Audit.

Executive Office

This is the office of the CEO of the Commission, is charged with the general direction of the organization, which includes implementation of Commission’s policies and directives, promotion of the development of sport in Botswana, and also protection and promotion of optimal utilisation of available resources, assets and facilities. The CEO is as such responsible for the general management of the organisation, reporting directly to the Board.

Sports Development

The department runs the core business of the Commission. It is mainly concerned with assisting BNSC National Sport Associations to fulfil their sports development obligations as well as initiating, administering and sustaining viable sports development projects at all levels, where necessary. This department also has to facilitate formalised sporting activities within schools and institutions as well as within the community across the country, as well as initiating and facilitating programmes that are meant to support the welfare of sports persons. Foreign sports experts operate under this department, for it is sports development that they have been brought to this country to enhance.

Business Development

This department initiates, coordinates and facilitates marketing and communications activities of the Commission. It has as its prime objectives; enhancement of the Commission’s corporate image, branding the Commission, promotion of the National Sports Vision 2028, attracting commercial sector participation to sport, marketing Commission facilities, as well as raining funds for the Commission. The department is also charged with the Commission’s general Information Systems Management.

Finance

The Finance department is responsible for all financial matters of the Commission. These include budgets, financial and management accounts, as well as general accounting to all the relevant authorities as may be necessary. The department is unique in that it reports to both the Treasurer of the Commission and the CEO.

Lands and Facilities

Lands and Facilities’ department is responsible for acquisition of land and facilities for sport as well as development and management of facilities for the Commission as may be necessary for the enhancement of its activities. It also coordinates and advises on matters related to lands and facilities for the Commission. These include provision of offices for affiliates and the Secretariat.

Human Resources and Administration

The Human Resources and Administration department is responsible for the Commission’s human resources’ mobilization, development and retention, as well as general administration matters. These include; staff welfare, recruitment, training, supplies, transport, and other related issues. The department is also responsible for the up-skilling of affiliates’ administrators and personnel.

Internal Audit

The Internal Auditor is responsible for the creation and maintenance of the Commission’s financial systems, facilitating proper controls and monitoring systems across board. The Internal auditor is to facilitate smooth-running external audit. This office is also expected to give guidance to affiliates in matters of audit where necessary.
