African Union Sports Council Region 5 Confederation Forum Kicks Off in Gaborone

The African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Confederation Forum has officially commenced in Gaborone, Botswana, under the theme “For an Inclusive, Innovative, and Sustainable Sport.” This two-day forum is taking place from November 27-28, 2024, and features a series of key discussions aimed at promoting the development of sports in the region.
The event began with an opening ceremony where the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports & Arts Mr. Tebogo Matibisi delivered a welcome address, officially launching the 2024 AUSC Region 5 Confederation Forum. He emphasized the significant role that sports play in Botswana’s economy and its broader social impact.
Day one of the forum focused on several key topics, including the context of sports development in the region, with a special focus on government investment in sport in Botswana. These discussions aimed to provide insight into how sports can contribute to economic growth and community well-being.
Day two of the forum will delve into more specialized topics, including technical aspects of sports, podium performance, and the crucial role of coaches in developing long-term talent. There will also be a safeguarding workshop, where the importance of creating a safe and secure environment for athletes will be highlighted. The forum will conclude on the second day with the formulation of resolutions based on the discussions held.
Dignitaries attending the event include Mr. Imon Moreetsi Nogosi, Director of Sports at the Ministry of Sports & Arts, Mr. Stephen M. Stephen, Director of Business Development & Property Management at the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC), Mr. Stanley Mutoya, CEO of AUSC Region 5, Dr. Decius Hikabwa Chaipande, AUSC Coordinator, Mr. Alfred Foloko, President of ANOCA Zone VI, Mr. Shaun Adriaanse, Secretary General of the Southern African Sports Confederations (SASCON), and Mr. Falcon D. Sedimo, former CEO of BNSC, along with various national team coaches, media representatives, and members of Botswana’s sports federations.
The forum is expected to be a significant platform for fostering collaboration and advancing the future of sport in Africa.
