The Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) has reaffirmed its commitment to community development and stakeholder engagement through a meaningful donation to the Masunga community. In a gesture aimed at strengthening local administration and supporting grassroots initiatives, the Commission handed over a laptop and 100 chairs to be used at the Masunga Kgotla.
This contribution follows an earlier courtesy call made by the BNSC leadership to Kgosi Maruje III, during which areas of collaboration and community support were discussed.
Speaking at the handover, BNSC Chief Executive Officer Olebile Sikwane underscored the importance of engaging communities as part of the Commission’s broader mandate. He highlighted that sport plays a critical role in promoting healthy lifestyles, fostering social cohesion, and identifying talent at grassroots level. Mr. Sikwane further noted that even as the economy remains challenged, its essential for institutions like the BNSC to contribute meaningfully to community development by providing necessary resources for Government activities.
Receiving the donation, Maruje III expressed sincere appreciation for the support, emphasizing the significant impact the items will have on the operations of the Kgotla and the broader community. He noted that such resources enhance administrative efficiency and improve the capacity of the Kgotla to serve its people effectively.
Maruje III also highlighted the longstanding relationship between the BNSC, the Ministry of Sports and Arts through Honorable Jacob Kelebeng, and the Masunga community. He pointed to key sporting infrastructure facilities in the area, including the Masunga Sport Complex and the Centre for Sport Excellence for softball located at Masunga Senior School, as evidence of the Commission’s continued investment in local sport development.Maruje III further shared that the community is actively working towards establishing an athletics club, while its football team is currently competing in the second division league, clear indicators of ambition within the village. Maruje III thanked Minister Kelebeng for his active community engagement, and wished him and the BNSC well for the World Relays project.
In line with this momentum, the BNSC is undertaking refurbishment works at the Masunga Sport Complex. These efforts are aimed at revitalizing the facility to ensure it can fully serve the community and surrounding areas. Once completed, the upgraded complex is expected to enhance participation in sport, support talent development, local activities and position Masunga as a key contributor to Botswana’s sporting landscape.
Through initiatives such as this, the BNSC continues to demonstrate its dedication not only to sport, but also to empowering communities and creating sustainable development opportunities across the country.
