BNSC Host successful CSE School Holiday Training Camp

Held from the 1st to 6th April 2026 at Mater Spei College in Francistown, bringing together over 400 participants, including 352 student athletes and 56 officials, for a five-day experience focused on growth, learning, and development. Guided by the theme “Nurturing Excellence, Building Champions for Botswana,” the camp created an environment where young athletes could improve their abilities while also developing as individuals.

From the first day, the camp established a clear sense of purpose. During the orientation session, athletes were introduced to the expectations, rules, and values of the camp. There was a strong emphasis on discipline, respect, and creating a safe and supportive sporting environment. This helped everyone settle in and understand that the camp was not just about playing sport, but about developing the right mindset as well.

The training sessions focused on building strong foundations across all sport codes. Instead of going too deep into complex systems, the emphasis was on improving basic skills, techniques, and overall understanding of each sport. In football, players worked on control, passing, movement, and simple decision making. Softball athletes focused on clean fielding, accurate throwing, and batting basics. Volleyball players concentrated on communication, positioning, and ball control.

In karate, the sessions focused on proper technique, discipline, and controlled movements, helping athletes improve both physically and mentally. Boxing training centred on basic combinations, footwork, and defensive awareness. Across all codes, the goal was to sharpen fundamentals and help athletes become more confident in the basics of their sport.

Coaches played an important role throughout the camp, guiding athletes, correcting mistakes, and encouraging consistency. As the days went on, there was visible improvement in how athletes approached training and how they executed the simple things that matter most.

The afternoons were dedicated to educational and character-building sessions, which added an important layer to the overall experience. The safeguarding session helped athletes understand the importance of safety in sport, their rights, and the need to speak up when something is not right. It created awareness around building a safe and respectful sporting culture.

The drug abuse awareness session, delivered in partnership with the Botswana Police Service, gave athletes a real understanding of how substance abuse can affect their health, performance, and future. It encouraged them to make responsible choices both in and out of sport.

The anti doping session focused on the importance of clean sport. Athletes learned about banned substances, testing procedures, and the importance of fairness. It reinforced the idea that success should come through hard work and honesty.

As the camp progressed, athletes had the opportunity to put what they learned into practice through mini tournaments. These matches were not just about winning, but about applying basic skills, working as a team, and building confidence. The level of play improved as athletes became more comfortable and more aware of their roles.

The finals and exhibition matches brought energy and excitement, while also showing how much progress had been made over the five days. Athletes played with more confidence, better coordination, and a clearer understanding of their sport.

Outside of training and competition, the camp also created space for athletes to connect. They built friendships, shared experiences, and learned from each other. The reflection sessions allowed them to think about what they had gained and how they could continue improving even after the camp.

By the end of the camp, the impact was clear. Athletes improved their basic skills and techniques, gained knowledge beyond the field of play, and developed a better understanding of discipline and teamwork. The camp also helped identify promising talent and strengthened the pathway for future development within the CSE programme.

Overall, the camp achieved its goal of developing well rounded athletes. It showed that focusing on the fundamentals, while also building character and awareness, is key to shaping the next generation of athletes in Botswana.
